BCIS 2017 Annual General Meeting-Victoria

The BCIS Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday March 13, 2017 in the Main Conference Room at the Pacific Forestry Centre in Victoria at 506 W. Burnside Road, Saanich (near the Tillicum Mall). The AGM starts at 9:30 am followed by a great buffet lunch featuring sockeye salmon and pasta and a very special guest speaker Alan McMurtrie-the renowned Iris reticulata breeder and expert from Ontario.
Alan McMurtrie has spent decades breathing new life into spring-blooming Iris reticulata. His striking hybrids were recently recognized by Royal Horticultural Society publication The Garden.

McMurtrie is a retired electrical engineer turned plant breeder. He’s one of those folks who become obsessed with a certain type of plant and then spend years and years fiddling with the species, in the hopes of coming up with something better than the original. He became fascinated by Iris reticulata during a trip to Turkey (where they grow wild on hillsides) back in 1985 and wondered if he could broaden the genetic base of the ones that were currently in cultivation. The thought got him so excited, he actually took early retirement from Ontario Hydro.

Now, three decades on, Alan is being hailed in Europe for his colourful transformation of a hitherto unremarkable species. In The Garden article, new varieties of Iris reticulata that McMurtrie has developed are being called “dramatic” “gorgeous” and “absolutely superb.” One, a delicious confection of purple and yellow with a stripe of brilliant orange, appears on the cover of the highly respected magazine.

You don’t want to miss this special BCIS event-seats are limited- cost including a sumptuous lunch is $25 per person in advance. Cheques should be made out to BC Iris Society c/o 995 Hutchinson Road, Cobble Hill, BC V0R 1L4. On arrival at PFRC please DO NOT park in front of the PFRC building but find a spot behind in one of the many parking lots.

Lunch is at 1130 and the guest speaker is at 1230
