Victoria
The Victoria Chapter of Master Gardeners (VMGA) was established in 2000, and includes the southern area of Vancouver Island: Greater Victoria, Saanich Peninsula, Sooke, Langford and up the Malahat to Mill Bay. Our mission is to provide the most up-to-date information on reliable and environmentally responsible horticultural practices to members in our region. As volunteers, we share this knowledge as well as our experience and love of gardening with the public through a variety of community service activities.
The Victoria Master Gardener Association (VMGA) is a group whose members have successfully completed the Master Gardener Basic Training Program and have completed or are completing the necessary volunteer hours to reach full certified status. Although most of us have taken the Master Gardener Basic Training Program through the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP), we welcome Master Gardeners trained elsewhere. For further information about this program, and numerous Community Education courses offered, please contact www.hcp.ca/. A fully subscribed Master Gardener course started January 2012 and will complete in May. If you are interested in a future Basic Training Session, please advise HCP of your interest.
We volunteer at community events such as nursery clinics, plant sales, garden shows and fall fairs, or other events with a gardening focus where we can share our knowledge with the public. We also are involved in projects such as plant ID and labeling for some public gardens, and youth and school programs in the community. The Association encourages a multifaceted approach to gardening problems and emphasizes the promotion of plant health, the use of environmentally responsible solutions, and the employment of Integrated Pest Management.
