New Community Programs Start!
Victoria Master Gardeners are involved with two Community Outreach programs this Spring. "GROW IT, COOK IT, EAT IT" is a grant-sponsored program offered by Glendale Gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific with the theme of Growing Knowledge between Seniors and Families. Master Gardener Mentors attend the 13 lessons that run from March into September, in addition to providing monthly mentoring with each participant learning to grow food in his/her home garden. Course includes garden layout, soils, seeding, veggies and fruits, pest management, harvesting and enjoying the results. For more information contact www.GlendaleGardens.ca
A second Community Outreach program started April 10 under the sponsorship of Youth Employment Service in Sidney, BC. The "GARDENER'S APPRENTICE" Work Experience Certificate Program provides teens with 9 hours of instruction given by Master Gardeners over three Sundays, using Glendale Gardens as the demonstration facility. Curriculum covers employment expectations, safe work practices, soils, weed ID, dividing of plants, mulches and amendments, watering and planting of beds and containers. Hands-on practice throughout.
School Tours at Glendale Gardens are also supported throughout May and June.
